  • Farmington Hills helps with Southfield fire
    Posted On: Feb 42, 2017

Farmington Hills firefighters provided assistance Friday, Feb. 3, to the Southfield Fire Department at the scene of an apartment building fire.

Shortly after noon, the Farmington Hills Fire Department received the call for assistance at the Carnegie Park Apartments, located on 11 Mile Road at American Drive.  Four firefighters and a battalion chief responded from Farmington Hills Fire Headquarters/Station No. 5.

“Responding firefighters were met with several challenges, including a fire that was well-advanced and brutally cold temperatures that caused icy conditions,” said Fire Chief Jon Unruh, who also responded to the scene.

Farmington Hills firefighters rescued a resident who was trapped in his apartment due to heavy smoke conditions in the hallway.  Firefighters deployed a ground ladder to his third-floor balcony and assisted the resident down to safety.

“Our firefighters did an excellent job rescuing this resident," Unruh said. "It was a high-risk scenario that we practice and train for routinely.”

Farmington Hills firefighters from Station No. 3, located on Grand River, also helped out by covering runs and handling other calls to the Southfield Fire Department while its firefighters were busy fighting the apartment fire.  The Farmington Hills Fire Department was one of eight departments that assisted at the scene for more than six hours.
