In commemoration of Fire Prevention Week, the Northville City Fire Department will host open houses from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Oct. 15 at Station No. 1 in Northville, 215 W. Main, and at Station No. 2 in Plymouth, 201 S. Main, where it also provides fire and EMS services.

The department is also offering a free home fire safety review to make fire safety recommendations. During the review, a team of fire department personnel will meet with residents at their home, review items such as smoke detectors, electrical outlets, storage of flammable materials, home escape plans and other items that can impact home fire safety. Residents will receive a written report of recommendations.

During the open houses, fire department staff will visit with guests, distribute fire safety information and provide tours of the stations and equipment.

“All are welcome to stop by, meet your local firefighters and EMS personnel and learn about how to protect your home, business and family,”Fire Chief Steve Ott said.

Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire that began Oct. 8, 1871, and killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. It continued into the next day and did the most extensive damage Oct. 9. It is observed each year during the week that includes Oct. 9.

The NCFD has 55 part time and paid on-call personnel who provide fire prevention, fire suppression and EMS services to 15,000 residents. The department averages 1,600 calls for service each year.
