A fire that started in the bedroom of a home near Six Mile and Merriman left smoke damage throughout the house and displaced the residents.

Livonia firefighters were called to a house fire at about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning in the 31500 block of Grove. Greg Thomas, a Livonia Fire Department fire inspector, said one of the residents who lived there called 911 after seeing a small fire begin in the first-floor bedroom she was sleeping in, though she had awoken previous to the fire starting.

“While she was up, she heard a loud ‘pop’ and then basically started to see the fire in the corner of the bedroom,” he said. “Then, she and her son at that point called 911 and cleared the house.”

A mother and son reside at the home.

The fire department arrived and turned off power to the home before extinguishing the fire. Thomas said there was significant damage in the bedroom where it began and smoke damage throughout the rest of the house. No one was injured.

Fire officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire, Thomas said Tuesday afternoon.

“It appears to be electrical in nature,” Thomas said.

No foul play is suspected in the fire.

Fire Chief Shadd Whitehead said while one of the residents was awake at the time, the smoke detectors in the home were going off, an important reminder to residents to make sure they have operating smoke detectors in the home.

“We like to reinforce those,” he said.
